New data published by the Office for National Statistics has revealed more than 130,000 vehicles were stolen last year.
In addition to the 25% year-on-year rise in vehicle theft, there has been a 10% jump in vehicle break-ins; more than 200,000 vehicles were targeted by thieves last year.
Simple solutions can be a deterrent to many thieves. For example, keep keys away from doors and windows to prevent so-called ‘relay theft,’ where thieves hijack the signal from a key to unlock a car and drive it away. Steering locks can also be used as a visible deterrent. Drivers should always take valuables with them, or store them out of sight.
Van drivers are particularly affected by theft. In total, nearly 20,000 tool thefts from vehicles were reported to the police in 2022 - up 10% on 2021 - costing business owners £66 million. On average, each theft costs owners nearly £3,500 in lost tools and equipment.
